Release of the new version of the Drupal CMS, supported by top organizations around the world.

Portland, USA and worldwide, June 3, 2020 — Release of the new version of Drupal, the most powerful open-source enterprise content management system. This is the most comprehensive upgrade for Drupal to date.

Drupal 9 provides marketers, designers, and developers with the tools to build high-performance systems from layout to launch.

Drupal 9 includes even more advanced features that Drupal developers and users love. One in every 30 websites worldwide, including Lufthansa, the CDC National Prevention Information Network, the European Commission, Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders, NASA, the GRAMMYs/Recording Academy, and Stanford University trust Drupal as the platform for their ambitious goals.

Drupal 9 - Ongoing Adoption of New Technologies and Design Improvements

The updated version brings powerful new features and user interface improvements. These features align with Drupal’s vision for the next generation of the web and include:

One of Drupal’s key users says they rely on Drupal’s easy-to-use interface to keep their content up to date, even when Drupal developers are unavailable.

In one project, ACLU uses Drupal, the ACLU team writes, "Thanks to Drupal’s new capabilities for creating and managing content, including robust media support ... [and] complete layout control without developer help, ... [Drupal] enabled ACLU to be more dynamic and responsive to external events."

Although this new version makes it easier for non-developers to participate in dynamic web platforms, it also continues to push core technology to the forefront of the digital market, allowing developers to build next-generation web applications.

"Drupal's API-first architecture puts it ahead of other decoupled and headless frameworks," says Tim Lehnen, CTO of the Drupal Association. "Drupal can serve as a content hub for a wide range of clients built with the latest technologies, including modern JavaScript frameworks like React, Angular, or Vue, or even new devices such as digital assistants and AR/VR applications."

Buytaert says that making the upgrade process as simple as possible for users was a key goal.

"Innovation in Drupal has only accelerated since the release of Drupal 8 four years ago," says Buytaert. "Historically, upgrading a major version of Drupal was costly. With Drupal 9, we wanted to make changes quickly and provide a smooth upgrade path from Drupal 8. And we did it! Upgrading from Drupal 8 to Drupal 9 is the easiest major upgrade in over 10 years."
