How to programmatically track the moment a user logs in?

Please tell me (which direction to dig), how can I track the moment a user logs into the site in my module?
That is, immediately after the user has logged in, I need to trigger a specific action.
I know about rules, but the catch is that I can't use additional modules for this task.
