Loading arbitrary values into the selection list

There are two selection lists in the new node. The first is linked to a taxonomy vocabulary. How can I make it so that when a value is selected in the first list, a query is triggered (to the second taxonomy vocabulary) and the results of the query are loaded into the second list?
